Medical Science
Medical Science I and II are comprehensive courses designed for high school students, offering a total of 6 credits, including 7 dual enrollment credits at Southern Maine Community College (SMCC).
Year 1- FIGS102 Intro to Healthcare Professions (1 credit) and HLTH 100 Introduction to Health Sciences (3 credits)
Year 2- HLTH Medical Terminology (3 credits)
Medical Science I covers essential topics such as medical law and ethics, human growth and development, cultural competency, communication, and introductory anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Students will learn about the integumentary, immune, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems, as well as infection control and safety, while also integrating technology in healthcare.
Medical Science II students will delve into the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, vital signs, CPR, first aid, and Stop the Bleed training, along with the urinary, digestive, endocrine, and reproductive systems, and aspects of mental healthcare.
Throughout both courses, students have the opportunity to earn national certifications, including American Heart Association CPR/AED/first aid, Stop the Bleed, Mandatory Reporter, National Healthcare Assessment, and OSHA 10 for Healthcare. Additionally, Medical Science I & II encompass critical skills such as medical terminology, medical math, employability skills, portfolio development, career exploration, leadership, and personal health and wellness.
